Proposition 8

Read the following First Presidency Letter

SALT LAKE CITY 30 June 2008 The following letter was sent from the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Church leaders in California to be read to all congregations on 29 June 2008:

Preserving Traditional Marriage and Strengthening Families

In March 2000 California voters overwhelmingly approved a state law providing that “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The California Supreme Court recently reversed this vote of the people. On November 4, 2 008, Californians will vote on a proposed amendment to the California state constitution that will now restore the March 2000 definition of marriage approved by the voters.

The Church’s teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God, and the formation of families is central to the Creator’s plan for His children. Children are entitled to be born within this bond of marriage.

A broad-based coalition of churches and other organizations placed the proposed amendment on the ballot. The Church will participate with this coalition in seeking its passage. Local Church leaders will provide information about how you may become involved in this important cause.
We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman. Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage.

My sister, April (who I absolutely adore), lives in Lancaster, CA. She was given the calling in her ward to be the head committee chairman of this “Proposition 8”. She organizes the “troops” in the ward. Every Saturday and they go out and physically knock on doors to make people aware of this new Proposition 8. She has told me that they 1)want to get people arware of it so they vote 2) when voting time comes they will go around asking in they have registered/voted, if not they will ask if they need a ride.
She is a SHINING example to me. She is donating money in many ways. She just paid her final car payment, so she is going to donate what would have been a car payment. The other week she house sat for a lady for who paid her $100 per night – she is donating that. She painted flowers in that same lady’s house and will donate that money. She had some things for sale on craigslist that she is going to donate the money. In total she is going to donate close to $2500!!! That is amazing. She recognized that the many “money making opportunities” fell in her lap and it was her duty to donate that money. It would be so easy to take all of that extra cash and pay bills, save it for a vacation or just play money. But no, she knows that it is the Lord’s way of blessing her with money that she now is donating.
I look up to my sister and the many people who are sacrificing their time and money. This is a HUGE deal. The church doesn’t become involved with politics usually… but this is a matter of MORALITY and SALVATION. Marriage between a man and a woman is such a sacred blessing and I pray that the people of California will feel the Saviors love and have their heart touched by those who are knocking doors to get people to vote for Proposition 8. Thank you President Monson, President Eyring, and President Uchtdorf for all of your hard work.

That is really cool- I hadn't heard of that letter. This has always been a big deal for us, especially for Brandon. We loved how hard Kathleen Briggs worked on this, even in Washington. We hope we can have a president who supports this as well. There is nothing like protecting the sanctity of marriage and families. But in the world we live in that we know is going down it is scary to see what comes to pass. Thanks for sharing this and way to go to your sister!
